Being a doctor is more than a job. Seven books for children
“So you read the right books as a child...”
There are many good books about doctors, but we have selected only a few to remind you that often a doctor is more than a profession.
Hugh Lofting. Books about Doctor Dolittle
This literary hero appeared in the trenches of the First World War. It was about the doctor that Hugh Lofting wrote a fairy tale, missing his children at the front. And later, his unique, animal-friendly, kind, sympathetic, peace-loving Doctor Dolittle fell in love not only with young readers, but also with adults - for example, harsh cowboys, to whom, according to the recollections of the writer’s son, he once read his manuscript, and also became the prototype probably familiar to everyone in our country, Doctor Aibolit. And although Dolittle is a fictional doctor, he was able to protect the psyche of his creator from the horrors of war...
Sofia Prokofieva. "The Adventures of the Yellow Suitcase"
Another fairy-tale doctor, whose yellow suitcase contains medicines that seem to be able to rid people of bad qualities and instill in them good ones. However, even in a fantasy world, decency, courage and the ability to enjoy life are acquired through life experience. But first, many still go to the doctor for hope and advice.
Anatoly Aleksin. "About our family"
The little hero of this short story loves and is very proud of his surgeon dad. He wants everyone to know how dedicated his father is to his work and how he saves lives. An artist can go on stage and everyone will admire his art, but the work of a doctor is not so noticeable: “After all, he can’t cut out someone’s appendix right on stage! Or, more precisely, the appendix...” the boy reasons. This is a book about a man who does not live for fame or career, but who is really needed by people. True, it seems that not everyone understands this... until he catches a serious virus...
Yuri Ermolaev. "Home of the Brave Cowards"
This is a story, first of all, about patients whom the chief doctor of the hospital where they are being treated called “brave cowards.” But without doctors, nurses, nannies, these little heroes would not have accomplished their feats of patience and overcoming. This is a story about cooperation between a doctor and a patient, and the prototype of the chief physician was the famous surgeon and inventor and the “good wizard” so necessary for his patients, Dr. Ilizarov.
Evgenia Kalmykova. "Nikolai Pirogov. Great Surgeon"
The future of his patient often depends on how well a doctor does his work - and this is one of the main thoughts of this small book, which tells in simple and understandable language for a child why Professor Pirogov’s hard work and passion made him a great surgeon (whose order, by the way, , was established in Russia on June 19, 2020).
Alexander Kuprin. "Wonderful Doctor"
And this is how Alexander Kuprin captured the outstanding physician. Professor Pirogov was not only a doctor, but also a person with a big heart: seeing someone else’s misfortune, he tried to help not only professionally, but also simply as a human being. And although this story looks more like a good fairy tale, it actually happened, and Kuprin simply wrote it down.
Julius Krelin. "Letter to my son"
A physician by profession, Krelin in his work more than once takes on the theme of the vocation of a doctor, and his story “Surgeon” formed the basis of the film “Days of the Surgeon Mishkin” with Oleg Efremov in the title role. The collection of stories “Letter to a Son” is not easy to find today, but this particular book is addressed to young people choosing the path of a doctor. These stories are about responsibility, respect, dedication, love for people and one’s business, and that the decision to enter this particular profession must be balanced, because the responsibilities of a real doctor often go beyond the scope of the job title...
A fairy tale about a sick tummy, a good doctor and a Little Bear who stopped being afraid
One day, on Friday, in the evening, at about six o'clock, a Talkative Magpie began to fly back and forth over the forest. She carried the latest news. Soroka had been doing this for many years and believed that she was working as an announcer for Forest Radio. Although no one asked her about this, and there was no radio in the forest.
- Attention attention! - Magpie chirped loudly. – Listen to the latest forest news. Little Bear ate too many raspberries and now his tummy hurts!
Hearing this, the Hedgehog said to himself: “So. If Little Bear has a tummy ache, it means I need to urgently run to him - maybe I can help with something.” And he ran. More precisely, I went. On a brand new wooden scooter that he was recently given for his birthday.
The little bear was sitting under a raspberry bush with a sad look.
- Hello! - Hedgehog told him. – Talkative Magpie said that your tummy hurts. This is true?
- Oh, Hedgehog, you would know how much I would like Magpie to be wrong. But it's true…
– Did you really eat too many raspberries?
The little bear became even sadder.
– Yes, unfortunately, that’s true.
Concerned Hedgehog asked:
– Does your mother treat you with something so that your tummy stops hurting as soon as possible?
- No, Hedgehog, mom said that tummies are a “serious matter”, and they should be treated by doctors for animals and children. And now she is going to take me to the clinic. And I'm a little scared...
Then Hedgehog quickly came up with a way out.
– You know, Little Bear, this is what we’ll do. I’ll quickly ride my scooter to the clinic and ask the doctor’s aunt: should you continue to be afraid, or is it not so scary to treat your tummy? Sit here and wait for me!
And he rushed to the clinic. The doctor was a little surprised when she saw the Hedgehog:
- Are you sick too? I’m waiting for Little Bear - Magpie reported that he had eaten too many raspberries and had a stomach ache. He needs to be examined urgently.
- Yes! - Hedgehog blurted out. - That is, no! In general, “no” means that nothing hurts me, and “yes” means that Little Bear is hurt. And his mother, Ursa Major, is just about to lead him to you. And he hid under a raspberry bush and was afraid. He thinks that treating his tummy is scary. Could you tell us how doctors treat children's and animals' tummies?
Aunt the doctor smiled.
- It's clear. So, Little Bear sent you to me “on reconnaissance.”
- No, it's me. To help him.
- Well, that's right. Then listen.
And the doctor told Hedgehog everything. The belly, whether of a small animal or a child, she said, is a very difficult part of the body. There, inside, there are many different organs - the liver, the kidneys, the stomach, and... in general, a lot more. Since they are all located inside the abdomen, they are called internal. And all these organs are important; they must be healthy.
When suddenly a child’s tummy starts to hurt, it means that one of the important internal organs has become ill and needs to be treated. Therefore, in such cases, you must definitely come to see a doctor.
– Is this very scary? - asked the Hedgehog.
“No, it’s not scary at all,” answered the aunt doctor. – First, the doctor will feel the tummy with his hands. Then, perhaps, he will take such a special device and move it a little over the sore tummy, while on a special screen - just like on TV - those same internal organs will be visible. And believe me, it doesn’t hurt at all. Just a little ticklish. The doctor will determine which organ has become unwell and prescribe the correct treatment. So that things don't get complicated.
– What are complications? – asked the inquisitive Hedgehog.
– This is when treatment takes a long time and is difficult, and the stomach hurts even more. And who wants to be sick for a long time, right?
The Hedgehog immediately rushed to the Little Bear and told him everything. He immediately took his mother, Ursa Major - well, to be honest, it was more likely that she took him by the paw - and together they went to the doctor to examine his sore tummy.
And the very next day the Talkative Magpie flew back and forth over the forest again and conveyed the latest news:
- Attention attention! The little bear stopped being afraid and went to the clinic! There, the doctor examined him and quickly determined that he had pain in his tummy. And he treated him. Everyone, everyone, everyone! If you have a stomach ache, you should definitely go to the doctor. It's neither painful nor scary! If anyone doesn’t believe it, ask Little Bear!
